What Does it Mean to Be a “Leader”?

what does it mean to be a leader

what does it mean to be a leaderLeadership is a huge issue that many people would love to learn more about.  Many people wish they had been born with leadership abilities because, let’s face it, we all have dreams to make a huge difference in this world.  We all aspire to great things, especially young people who haven’t been beaten down for 40 years or so.  But even older people wish they could somehow magically become a leader because they desire to be influential, and many people think that being a leader leads to great wealth.  And they believe with great wealth comes happiness.

I disagree that money will lead to happiness, but at the same time I know how much your life will change if you become a leader.  That’s the thing, I’m reading a book right now called the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, by John C. Maxwell.  I’ll tell you what, this is an awesome read and you should definitely go buy it or get it at your local library.  This guy is pretty awesome, he’s a Christian man and does all kinds of leadership seminars across the country.  But not only does he know how people become leaders, he has actually put the ideas into action and achieves great success in everything he does.  Pretty much everything he touches turns to gold, but it’s because he spent the majority of his life learning from other leaders.

He once did a survey at one of his conferences, and found out only around 10% of leaders learned what they know naturally.  Another 5% came from crisis.  The other 85% came when another leader took them under their wing.  They were mentored into a leadership role in their life.  One thing I want you to know is that you do not need to be born with any special abilities to become a leader, you just have to find another leader and learn from them.  Try your best to work with them.  Most will be more than willing to help you, because they understand that leaders build up other people.  You have to be willing to put in a time of learning and acquiring new skills if you want to get yourself into a leadership role.

You may be asking yourself, what does it mean to be a leader?  In my opinion, leaders are people who can influence large groups of people to follow them.  They have a strong vision and are strong emotionally, physically, and mentally.  They are willing to do what other people won’t do, and don’t care what other people think about them.  They are able to make plans, and put them into action.  They have influence and loads of passion.  They build other people up around them, and care very much for all humankind.  They will say what they believe no matter what anyone says or thinks.  They desire to be the change that they want to see in the world.  They don’t sacrifice their integrity for anybody.  When a leader speaks, others listen.   They surround themselves with other leaders, and go all in 110% when they see something needs to be done.  They touch other people’s hearts before they ask for a hand.  They are not controlled by worldly ideas and perceptions.  They know God, and are very in touch with their spirit man and subconscious.  They always know what to do because they are in touch with forces outside of the human mind.  That is what it means to be a leader.  If you want to know more, you need to immerse yourself in the teachings of other leaders, like I’m doing right now.

To Your Success,

Adam Boyd

Hi Adam, I've read that having the right mentor is essential in a number of books. That sounds like great advice to me. Leadership comes in many forms and we see it pop-up in different circumstances throughout our lives. Not everyone can lead but it seems like a common trait among the successful.

Thanks for the comment Brian! I completely agree. Leadership is definitely the common denominator among the majority of successful people. This is true in all walks of life...not just business.
